Senior Backend Engineer
Backend engineer at climate-tech startup: own Python / Django services turning enterprise data into decarbonisation insights. High impact, equity, London base, fast-growing team.
Our Mission
The world’s rate of decarbonisation needs to be 10x faster. The largest, most complex organisations contribute an outsized amount to the problem but lack the trustworthy, decision-grade data they need to reduce their environmental impact (and, while very important, decoding how to comply with ever-increasing reporting standards takes precious time away from sustainability leaders who need to be driving change in their organisations).
Minimum solves this challenge by structuring and unifying the world’s environmental data. We are the Environmental Data Layer which large, complex businesses use to transform their existing data into high-quality, high-trust environmental data at scale. Unlike others in the space, we’re ruthlessly focused on solving data acquisition, processing, and calculation challenges.
Where we’re up to
- We’re a late seed-stage business backed by top-tier investors, including NEA (unannounced), Lakestar (unannounced), Octopus Ventures, Y Combinator, and more.
- Our product is used by a range of large public and private companies, including Volkswagen, UK Power Networks, Games Workshop, Nasdaq (and many more) to streamline their data processes, meet stringent international reporting requirements, and gain valuable insights on how to decarbonise their business.
- Our team is passionate about evolving our product to the next level, ensuring we’re delivering the most value possible to customers as quickly as possible, and scaling up our sales & distribution engine as we serve more and more Enterprise customers.
The Opportunity
- This is an opportunity to contribute to shaping and building up a product and company that is genuinely changing the world and solving real problems for customers. Minimum’s platform is just one small part of solving the climate crisis, but we’re dedicated to driving enormous value through our slice of the overall solution.
- Carbon accounting has been estimated to be a $60B market opportunity. We believe that’s an underestimate. Organisations of all shapes and sizes across the globe are being forced to improve their carbon data to meet increasing reporting and decarbonisation requirements from governments, investors, and customers. Sustainability is no longer a ‘nice-to-have’ for forward-thinking companies; it’s an absolutely essential compliance and commercial imperative for all businesses.
- Our market-leading product is actively delivering value to large Enterprise customers, but in the context of the full scope of what we want to achieve, our work has only just begun. There are opportunities to drive incredible amounts of customer value by doubling down further on what we’ve already built, solving even more pain points, and pursuing closely adjacent opportunities, such as integrating AI into data workflows or enabling automatic acquisition of energy data from the point of consumption.
The Role
As a Senior Backend Engineer at Minimum, you’ll play a critical role in shaping our product’s backbone, designing and delivering scalable data systems, APIs, and backend services that underpin all user and business outcomes. You’ll collaborate closely with Product, Sustainability Experts, and Engineering peers from ideation through release and iteration, ensuring that our backend isn’t just robust, but an active engine for rapidly delivering and learning from new features in production. This isn’t a role for siloed builders: you’ll help drive discovery, inform technical trade-offs, and shape how we work.
You will:
- Partner closely with Product, UX, and domain experts to understand the “why” behind user needs and help shape solution architecture from the outset.
- Design and build APIs, data models, and services that are intuitive, maintainable, and responsive to evolving product and user demands.
- Integrate with and validate third-party services and data sources, proactively surfacing opportunities and risks to the wider team.
- Ship early, learn fast: support a “build/measure/learn” loop by instrumenting features, surfacing system/data bottlenecks, and iterating quickly based on real-world feedback.
- Contribute to the reliability and efficiency of our deployment, monitoring, and incident response processes, not just for uptime, but for scalable, transparent delivery.
- Write high-quality, maintainable, and well-tested code; participate in code reviews to share knowledge and enforce standards that help the whole team grow.
- Investigate and resolve bugs, performance bottlenecks, and production issues with a mindset of continuous product and team improvement.
About You
You’re energised by impact, your best work happens when you see backend systems make measurable differences for users and the business. You’re as comfortable in technical deep-dives as you are in product discussions and thrive when collaborating closely, especially in fast-changing, high-ambiguity contexts. You believe in teaching, learning, and raising the bar for everyone around you.
You should be someone who:
- Thrives on close partnership with teammates across Product, Design, and Ops, curious about the problem, not just the code.
- Sees the backend as a key driver for product learning: always focused on evidence (metrics, monitoring, usage) and continual iteration after release.
- Communicates technical complexity with clarity, across engineers, PMs, domain experts, and sometimes directly to customers.
- Cultivates a “ship to learn” mindset: prefers delivering small, validated improvements over waiting for theoretical perfection.
- Embraces new tools: from AI-driven design and build workflows (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) to automated test and deployment.
- Models kindness, generosity, and a desire to make those around you better.
Must-have Skills
- 7+ years of professional experience developing backend applications in Python

- Strong hands-on experience with REST API design and development
- Proficiency with ORM libraries and scalable, maintainable data modeling
- Deep understanding of the foundations of scalable, high-quality backend systems
- Passion for and experience with code reviews, improving practices, and knowledge sharing
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Drive to own problems from idea through to ongoing improvement
Nice-to-have Skills
- Django, Django REST Framework, Django ORM expertise
